Alexius Appl – Focused on Design
The exhibition is a retrospective for the 80th birthday of one of the most remarkable creators of the "second strong generation" of Czech industrial designers, Assoc. Prof. Acad. Sculptor Alexius Appl (1944). Appl's remarkable, multifaceted, and at the same time very consistent work includes an unusually wide range from industrial design of tools, equipment, rail vehicles, and work for the electrical industry, through the design of lighting, interiors, urban and exhibition furniture, to sculptural and occasionally painting creation.
The National Technical Museum has opened another exhibition focused on industrial design after two years. Under the title Alexius Appl – Focused on Design, this time a retrospective is presented for the 80th birthday of one of the most remarkable creators of the "second strong generation" of Czech industrial designers, Assoc. Prof. Acad. Sculptor Alexius Appl (1944).
The exhibition aims not only to present specific examples of this designer's diverse work in temporal and disciplinary contexts. Through selected examples of cooperation with specific manufacturers, it shows that a designer can penetrate the development of such technical products that we do not usually associate with design. This is characteristic of Alexius Appl's design work – as well as the ability to respect the requirements for the functional qualities of products, their manufacturability, and the technical specifications of engineers, all while embodying an aesthetic and original design solution.
The exhibition is located in the Small Gallery of the Architecture, Building, and Industrial Design exhibition.
